Growing Instructions for Zone 5 Canada
Growing Zones:
Romaine lettuce thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9, making it suitable for Zone 5 where the climate is ideal for growing during the cooler months.
Planting Time:
In Zone 5, romaine lettuce can be planted from early spring (around late April) until mid-summer (usually by early July) for a continuous harvest.
Sun Requirements:
Romaine lettuce prefers full sun to partial shade. Aim for at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day for optimal growth.
Soil Preparation/Fertilizing:
Prepare well-draining soil enriched with organic matter such as compost. A balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10 is recommended to promote healthy growth.
Spacing:
Space the seeds or seedlings about 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for full leaf development and airflow.
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to ensure the lettuce remains crisp and tender.
Days to Harvest:
Romaine lettuce typically matures in about 70 to 75 days from seed.
Harvest:
Harvest romaine lettuce when the leaves are firm and crisp, and the heads feel solid. Cut the heads at the base or pick the outer leaves as needed for a continuous harvest.
To ensure plants arrive safe due to winter here in Zone 5, we will ship plants in May 2026.
To ensure the growing success of plants, please ensure to harden off plants before planting outdoors.
Seedlings will be shipped in plug packs or 2 - 3 inch pots. Photos are reflective of plants growing on the farm or examples of grown seedlings, not what will be shipped or picked up.
